A Study of Wang Anshi’s Theory of Destiny

Abstract

Wang Anshi devoted his life to reforms, inheriting the teachings of Confucius and Mencius, which continued the Confucian tradition
in personal cultivation and governance. His Theory of Destiny (Mandate of Heaven) is based on the ontological meaning of heaven, expressing that destiny cannot be altered or predicted. It also introduces the moral dimension of Destiny, highlighting the relationship between heaven
and humanity. Wang Anshi argues that human nature is neutral, and explores the interplay between natural disposition and human effort. Emphasizing the existence of a moral framework, he suggests that human nature and destiny have the potential for goodness. This study reflects
on the forward path of “understanding destiny” and “accepting destiny” under Destiny, revealing Wang Anshi’s call for diligent self-cultivation and the fulfillment of one’s nature in order to achieve unity with the Dao of Heaven. Ultimately, Wang Anshi continuously developed
his theory of Destiny in practice, constructing a new perspective for the revival of Confucianism and laying a foundation for later Confucian
revitalization movements.
