A Probe to the Lack of Emotional Education in the Novel Hard Times

Abstract


Charles Dickens is one of the most important and famous social realist novelists in the 19thcentury English literature. His work has
reached almost every corner of the country and shown much sympathy towards the wretched and the poor. His writings expose the evils and
corruptions that he detects in social darkness, such as the inhumane charity institution, hypocrisy of the Victorian people, capitalists exploitation, educational disadvantages and so on. The paper attempts to use Marxist Criticism and Freuds Psychoanalysis to explore how the inadequacies of bourgeois emotional education give rise to some characters failure in their professional careers or in their spiritual life.
