The Cultural Connotation of Chinese and Japanese Womens Clothing in the Tang Dynasty in a Comparative Perspective

Abstract


Since ancient times, vibrant cultural exchanges have characterized the relationship between China and Japan. Numerous scholars
have examined the impact of Chinese culture on Japanese culture from various angles, with the study of dress culture holding a significant
place among them. This paper aims to analyze, from a comparative viewpoint, the Ruqunthe quintessential attire of women during Chinas
Tang Dynastyand the J?ni-hitoe of Heian period, the corresponding traditional dress of Japanese women, exploring the differences and
connections between these two forms of attire in terms of their characteristics and cultural significance. The paper not only uncovers the distinctive styles of womens fashion during the Tang Dynasty in both China and Japan but also delves into the profound cultural meanings that
underpin them.
