Jian Wang

Abstract

The Buddhist caves in Xinjiang are remarkable ancient arts of the world. Especially, the many ancient characters in the cave mural
paintings truly express the characteristics of costumes and decorations of different people in different historical periods. On the basis of previous researches, this study focuses on the costumes and decorations of Buddhist monks and secular donors in the mural paintings of the Kizil
caves. Clothing is a fundamental element of culture. However, scholars have long been committed to the discussion of history, caves, music,
and dance, and the research on costumes of the characters in the cave mural paintings is not enough. Therefore, this study mainly summarizes
the costumes and decorations of the Buddhist characters in the mural paintings of the Kizil Caves. The Buddhist characters are written according to different types of stories. At the same time, we describe the costumes of secular characters in the mural paintings of the Kizil cave in
chronological order and compared the costumes of secular characters of different historical periods.
