Abstract
Top of the Mountains, a long novel written by Chi Zijian, depicts the suffering process of the protagonist Xin Qiza and his surrounding characters in the context of social change. In the process of writing, techniques were utilized such as symbolism and metaphor as well as
the depiction of details and the portrayal of the characters inner world, to make the connotation of suffering richer and deeper. This article
will analyze the suffering writing in Top of the Mountains from three aspects of suffering theme, individual destiny, growth and marriage, and
discuss how Chi Zijian shows the inner world of the characters and social changes through the depiction of suffering.
