The Transformation of the Core Theme of La Traviata from the Perspective of Translation -- Take the translation of Lin Shu and Wang Zhensun as an example

Abstract


La Traviata is a novel published by French writer Alexandre Jr. Dumas in 1848. It tells the story of the love and hatred between
the high-class courtesan Margaret and a rich young Armand. Lin Shu, a famous translator of the late Qing Dynasty, translated the work of La
Traviata in Paris at the end of the 19th century, which aroused great repercussions in the society. With the background of The Times, Lin Shu
rewritten the original work, which is embodied in the change of the characters and actresses of the protagonists and the deletion of some plots.
Wang translated La Traviata in the 1980s, the version fits the original work and less shows the translators own emotions. From the translation
of two different versions, we can see that the core theme of La Traviata changes from expressing loyalty to restoring love.
