The Construction of Newmans Identity in The American

Yingying Han

Abstract

The American is a novel written by Henry James and is his first novel to successfully deal with an international theme, that is, to explore the cultural differences between the United States and Europe. Identity refers to an individuals perception and sense of belonging to the
group or social role to which he or she belongs. Identity is not only a core part of self-concept but also can identify with ones own national
or cultural group identity and enhance national self-confidence. This dissertation aims to contribute to the study of cultural self-confidence in
China by studying the process of Newmans identity construction among Americans.
