A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of the Adapted Film To Live

Abstract

This paper employs Zhang Delu’s comprehensive framework for multimodal discourse analysis to examine the film To Live. The
analysis is conducted on three levels: the meaning level, the conceptual level and the form level. At the meaning level, the paper investigates
the representational, interactive, and compositional meanings in the film, particularly focusing on classic scenes. At the form level, the study
explores the narrative role of visual modes, the function of music as an auditory mode, and the relationships between different modes. At the
contextual level, specific examples are used to analyze the social activity settings involved in the discourse, the roles played by the communicative participants in society, and the communicative methods they adopt. This multimodal discourse analysis of the film To Live aims to
uncover how various semiotic resources work together to construct the film’s narrative and convey its thematic messages.
