An Analysis of the Conversational Implicature in the Dialogues in Empresses in the Palace

Abstract

Empresses in the Palace, as one of the classic palace dramas, has created a craze at home and abroad. Previous scholars have studied
this drama from the aspects of character image, music, subtitle translation and so on. However, there is still a lack of systematic research on its
conversational implicature. Therefore, based on the Cooperative Principle, the present study aims to explore the conversational implicature in
dialogues in Empresses in the Palace. The study found that some dialogues in the drama produce conversational implicature by violating the
four maxims of the Cooperative Principle, thus promoting the development of the plot and strengthening the portrayal of the characters. The
findings could give people a better understanding of this drama. Also, it could help people to use the Cooperative Principle properly in daily
life to achieve the expected communicative effect.
