Nature and Zen: A Comparison of Mood in Tang and Song Poetry and Edo Haiku

Abstract

In order to explore the cultural heterogeneity of Chinese and Japanese poetry in terms of aesthetic expression, Tang and Song poems and Edo haiku are taken as examples to study the differences in the selection of natural imagery, the expression of Zen, and the way of
constructing mood. It is concluded that Tang and Song poems emphasize the blending of scenes and the internalization of cosmic philosophy,
reflecting the poetic tradition of the unity of heaven and man, while Edo haiku emphasizes the momentary enlightenment and minimalist condensation, showing the aesthetic pursuit of material sorrow and emptiness. The heterogeneous relationship between the two in terms of philosophical foundation, linguistic structure and cultural connotation reveals the multiple paths of interpretation and the value of contemporary
mutual understanding of mood in Eastern poetics.
