An Iconographic Analysis of The Raft of the Medusa

Abstract


The Raft of the Medusa, a masterpiece by the French Romantic master Thdore Gicault, depicts a magnificent historical scene.
As a crucial methodology in the field of Western art history research, iconography is employed in this paper. By using the three - layer analysis method proposed by Panofsky, this paper conducts an in - depth iconographic description of The Raft of the Medusa, then analyzes it from
the perspective of symbolic signs, explores the characteristics of the era reflected in the painting, analyzes the profound aesthetic connotations
and social values contained in the images of The Raft of the Medusa, and further explains its far - reaching iconographic significance.
