Research on Contemporary Practice and Innovation Path of Wenchang Lime Sculpture Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Inheritance

Xiangyu Cui

Abstract

Wenchang lime sculpture murals began in the Southern Song Dynasty and originated from southern Fujian. The Song Dynasty
saw the first large-scale migration wave to Hainan, where migrants from Putian in southern Fujian traveled by water from the Fujian coast
to Hainan Island, mostly landing along the line from Qiongshan to Wenchang to Qionghai. The art of lime sculpture murals came to Hainan
with the Fujian migrants, taking root, sprouting, and evolving in the Wenchang area, with a history of more than 500 years. After centuries of
multicultural integration and continuous adaptation by craftsmen, it has formed an architectural decorative culture with strong local characteristics and its own unique style [4]. On May 10, 2023, Hainan Provincial Party Secretary Feng Fei came to Shibahing Village in Huiwen Town,
observed Wenchang lime sculpture creation on site, and pointed out the need to attach great importance to the protection, inheritance, and
revitalization of intangible cultural heritage such as lime sculpture, strengthen the training of inheritors, increase publicity and promotion, and
let intangible cultural heritage radiate new vitality in the integration of culture and tourism. On December 28, 2023, Wenchang lime sculpture
was announced by the Hainan Provincial Peoples Government as a representative project of the sixth batch of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Hainan Province, with the number VII-7.
