Reconstructing Chineseness: Lin Yutang’s Narrative Strategies in My Country and My People

Abstract

Lin Yutang’s My Country and My People (1935) redefines Chineseness for Western readers through strategic narrative techniques.
Combining humor, cultural critique, and comparative analysis, Lin challenges Orientalist stereotypes while bridging tradition and modernity.
His dual perspective—as both insider and outsider—allows him to reconstruct Chinese identity in a global context. Through anecdotal storytelling and accessible prose, he demystifies Chinese culture, fostering cross-cultural dialogue.
