A Scoping Review of Informal Learning in Popular Music Education

Abstract

This scoping review examines recent studies on informal learning in popular music education, focusing on theory, practice, gaps,
and future directions. Findings show informal learning boosts students’ motivation, creativity, and skills but faces challenges in teacher training, management, assessment, and cultural adaptability. Most research centers on Western contexts, lacking cross-cultural empirical studies.
Future studies should use mixed methods and long-term exploration to assess its impact in diverse cultural and digital settings.
