Translation and Research of JosSaramagos Works in the Mainland China

Zhenyu Huang

Abstract

JosSaramago remains the only portuguese-language writer to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature. The research on Saramagos works in the mainland China began relatively late, with current studies primarily focusing on the relationship between the work with the
world, and the work with the author, while the textual analysis and the reader reception studies remain underdeveloped. This paper examines
the translation, publication, and research of Saramagos works in the mainland in a phased and historically contextualized manner. Drawing
on M.H. Abrams four-element theory of literature, it systematically reviews the trajectory of Saramago studies in the mainland over the past
thirty years. The findings suggest that the mainland has cultivated fertile ground for further research, positioning Saramagos literature as a
vital conduit for renewed Sino-Portuguese literary communication and deserving of broader scholarly attention.
