Cultural Symbol Construction in Guangxi Sanyuesan Cultural Tourism Promotional Videos From the Perspective of Markedness Theory

Zheng Song, Fanxu Meng

Abstract

Based on the markedness theory in cultural semiotics, this paper analyzes the dynamic construction strategies of cultural symbols
in Guangxis Sanyuesan cultural tourism promotional videos. By examining the phased characteristics of promotional videos from 2014
to 2025, it explores how Guangxi transforms traditional folk symbols from marginalized marked items into cultural brands that integrate
tradition and modernity through the unmarked-marked interplay and the mechanism of neutral item bias, thereby promoting markedness
reversal. The study finds that Guangxi promotional videos enhance the uniqueness of ethnic culture while expanding cultural identity through
symbol recombination, cross-media communication, and international integration, offering theoretical insights for regional cultural heritage
and innovation.
