The Paradox of Social Media: Connectivity and Isolation

Abstract


This article conducts a critical analysis of the duality of social media and explores the contradiction between promoting social connections and exacerbating social isolation. Although digital platforms such as YouTube and Twitter were initially regarded as revolutionary
tools for Internet socializing in the Web 2.0 era, contemporary digital life presents a more complex situation. Social media enables users to
present themselves and participate in online interactions, while also intensifying feelings of loneliness, alienation and social division. Based
on the relevant recent literature, this paper points out that social media has simultaneously produced social effects and anti-social effects. As
digital technology increasingly serves as an intermediary for interpersonal relationships, understanding this digital paradox is particularly important for building a more participatory and inclusive digital environment.
