Translation Studies from the Perspective of Newmark’s Translation Theory -- A Case of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s English Translation of A Madman’s Diary

Abstract

This paper analyzes the translation strategies and effects of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of A Madman’s Diary using
Newmark’s text type theory, covering expressive, informative, and vocative aspects. Semantic translation conveys the original text’s emotions
and style, while communicative translation ensures information transmission and reader interaction. The combination of these two strategies
preserves cultural connotations, enhances readability, conveys the work’s literary value and ideological essence to English readers, and provides a paradigm for balancing faithfulness and acceptability in Chinese literature’s English translation.
