Urban Image Construction in Shanghai Dialect Short Videos on Douyin

Langyi Xu

Abstract

With the rapid rise of self-media, a wave of content creators with regional influence has emerged. The short videos they produce
display unique characteristics that diverge significantly from traditional city promotional films. By integrating sound and image, entertainment
and embodied experience, these videos reshape urban imagery. This study focuses on Shanghainese-speaking creators on Douyin. Through
case analysis, it explores how their video practices contribute to constructing Shanghais urban image and how dialect-based content fosters
urban meaning reproduction in the digital media era.
