Localization and Construction of Cultural Identity of Characters in Yang Xinyis Translation of The Time Machine

Rui Li

Abstract

Taking Yang Xinyis classical Chinese translation of H.G. Wells The Time MachineBa Shi Wan Nian Hou Zhi Shi Jie, as a case
study, this paper explores the localization characteristics of literary images and the construction of cultural identity in translated novels during
the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China from the perspective of comparative imagology. In the translation process, influenced by
social collective imagination, individual ideology, and aesthetic values, Yang Xinyi localized and rewrote the original characters such as "the
Time Traveller", "Weena", "the Eloi" and "the Morlocks" making them more compatible with the cultural background and reading habits of
Chinese readers. Meanwhile, the characters in Yangs translation, as ideological images of foreignness, reflect his self-identification with Chinese culture and the conflict and integration between traditional morality and new ideas.
