Discussion on the "Three Beauties" in Xu Yuanchongs English Translation of Tang Poetry Under the Theory of Schema

Yujun Liu

Abstract

Tang poetry, with its profound cultural depth, exquisite artistic conception, and strict requirements for prosodic structure, poses
significant challenges in translation. This has led to the academic saying: "Writing poetry is already difficult, but translating it is even more
challenging." As a pivotal figure bridging traditional and modern Chinese translation studies, Xu Yuanchong developed unique perspectives
on literary translation, particularly in introducing classical Chinese poetry. He advocated translating Tang poetry into verse form, emphasizing that translations should fully capture the original works aesthetic qualities. This inspired his renowned "Three Beauties" theoretical
frameworkhighlighting the beauty of artistic conception, rhythmic cadence, and formal structure, with the transmission of poetic essence
being paramount. Based on this foundation, this paper analyzes Xu Yuanchongs interpretation of the "Three Beauties" in English Tang poetry
translation through schema theory.
