A Study of Cultural Adaptation and Chinese Cultural Identity of International Students in China

Qian Shan, Yanping Tan*

Abstract

Against the backdrop of deepening globalization, international students in China serve as both important participants in Sino-foreign
cultural exchange and key targets for the dissemination of Chinese culture. Based on the dual perspectives of cultural adaptation and cultural
identity, this study investigates the current challenges faced by international students in China, including difficulties in cultural integration,
a low level of identification with Chinese culture, and ineffective cultural dissemination after returning to their home countries. The paper
systematically analyzes the root causes of these issues, such as a lack of strategic awareness in universities, singular channels for cultural dissemination, language barriers, outdated curriculum design, and isolated management models. Accordingly, targeted strategies are proposed:
reshaping educational concepts, enriching the cultural curriculum, broadening educational channels, and optimizing management strategies.
The research aims to provide actionable references for enhancing the quality of international student education in China, strengthening the soft
power of Chinese culture, and promoting deeper civilizational exchange and mutual learning.
