A Brief Discussion on the Life Wisdom in Zhuangzis "Qiwu Lun"

Chen Liao

Abstract

As a significant chapter of Zhuangzi's philosophical thought, the "Qiwu Lun" (Discussion on Equalizing Things) embodies profound practical wisdom for living. It first introduces the concept of "losing the self" ("Wusang Wo"), advocating for the deconstruction of selfcenteredness and the liberation from subjective biases and attachments, encouraging an open and inclusive attitude toward the world. Next,
it emphasizes "all things are equal" ("Qiwu Qi Yi"), dissolving the dualities of the worldly distinctionssuch as nobility and lowliness, right
and wrong, big and smallthus transcending narrow cognitive limitations. Building on this, it pursues the spiritual freedom of "free and easy
wandering" ("Xiaoyao You"), freeing the mind from secular constraints and returning to natural authenticity. These ideas offer unique perspectives for modern individuals to resolve interpersonal conflicts, teaching us to treat others with equality and tolerance, thereby reducing
conflicts born of prejudice and opposition. Furthermore, they serve as guidance for calming anxious and restless hearts in complex society,
helping people maintain inner peace and ease, and offering important insights into building harmonious relationships.
