The Functioning of Metapragmatic Expressions Used in Sketch Comedy Performance

Fumei Zeng

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic function of metapragmatic expressions (MPEs) in sketch comedy performance, with data
collected from the The Policeman and the Thief. It argues that the script writer selects MPEs to manipulate the performance progress in an
effort to achieve success and convey the implied meaning of the work. It is found that two kinds of language symbols are mainly used in this
sketch: verbal language and non-verbal language. The MPEs have the following metapragmatic functions: interpersonal affinity, construction
of identity, and cohesion of plot.
