A Study on Hao Jing's Thought on Mind and Human Nature
Abstract
he opposed the Cheng-Zhu school's separation of Principle (Li) and Qi and dualism of Mind and Human Nature. Instead, he argued that "human nature is invariably good, " holding that "Jishan Chengxing" (inheriting goodness and forming human nature) manifests in the unity of
human nature and the Dao of Heaven (Tiandao). As for habituation (Xi) and emotions (Qing), he argued that humans' unvirtuous behaviors
stem from habituation, and proposed "transforming habituation through human nature and reverting it to human nature"so human nature
governs habituation. He maintained that Mind and Human Nature cannot be separated from human affairs, emphasizing the unity of body and
mind and its (human nature's) inseparability from affairs. He stressed the body's role, arguing that innate nature manifests in human relationships and affairsreflecting his focus on practicing Renlun Wuli (human relationships and the principles of things).
