The Influence of Personality Traits on Performers' Directed Gaze: Evidence from Eye-Tracking
Abstract
introverted or extraverted. This dichotomy reflects fundamental differences in the direction of social energy: extraverts typically channel
their energy toward external stimuli, whereas introverts direct the energy inward. These personality traits have been shown to shape individuals' social behaviors and interpersonal engagement patterns. The present study investigates how introversion and extraversion influence individuals' public performance. Eye-tracking technology was employed to capture participants' first-person visual behaviors which
could provide insights into their underlying psychological and attentional processes. Participants were categorized as introverts or extraverts based on their scores on the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) and subsequently completed two mock public performance tasks:
a presentation task and a stage performance task. Analysis of the eye-tracking data revealed that extraverts exhibited more frequent and
longer fixations to the audience area compared to the introverts. At the same time, they also had more visual engagement with individual
audience members. These findings extend the personalityattention framework and offer ecological evidence in support of Gray's biological theory of personality. Furthermore, the results could provide practical insights for enhancing individuals' public performance skills
through the view of personality.
