Research on the Distribution Changes of Watermelon Cultivation in Guizhou during the Ming and Qing Dynasties

Changhong Yang

Abstract

The earliest record of watermelon introduction in Guizhou is found in the Guizhou Tujing Xinzhi from the Hongzhi reign period.
During the middle and late Ming Dynasty, watermelon cultivation areas in Guizhou were concentrated in present-day central Guizhou, northeastern Guizhou, and northern Guizhou. After the establishment of the Qing Dynasty, the area dedicated to watermelon cultivation in Guizhou
expanded significantly compared to the Ming period, spreading almost throughout the entire province. The expansion of watermelon cultivation in Guizhou during the Ming and Qing dynasties was not only an inevitable trend of historical development but was also closely related to
factors such as the penetration of central authority from the Ming and Qing courts, the economic development of the Guizhou region, and the
improvement of historical documentation.
