A Reinterpretation of "Boundedness" in the Bǎ-construction
Abstract
construction typically involves a temporal endpoint or a manifested result, that is, features of "bounded event". However, in existing corpora,
expressions such as bǎ liǎn xǐxǐ—though lacking a clear endpoint or visible result, are semantically acceptable. From a cognitive-linguistic
perspective, this paper reexamines the "boundedness" of the bǎ-construction and proposes that it should be viewed as a multidimensional "closure mechanism", consisting of four interacting levels: temporal/resultative boundedness, patient boundedness, cognitive boundedness, and
pragmatic boundedness.
