Research of OHenry's Creative Style and Artistic Value from the Perspective of Stylistics: A Case Study of The Last Leaf

Weikuan Wang

Abstract

As one of the worlds three great masters of short stories, O. Henrys literary creation is divided into two main stages with the
American Civil War as the watershed. The example text used in this paper belongs to his second stage, which abandons romanticism and
adopts realism to depict the social life of a specific era. Currently, there are numerous academic studies on the creative style and artistic value
of OHenrys short stories, but few explore them from the perspective of stylistics. Therefore, this paper will conduct a textual analysis based
on stylistics from three aspects the stark contrast at the linguistic level, the aesthetic value at the register level, and the real-world dimension
at the genre levelto explore OHenrys creative style and artistic value, hoping to bring some inspiration to researchers and enthusiasts of
English and American literature.
