Cultural Adaptation and the Translator's Role in the Localization of Black Myth: Wukong

Abstract

China’s video game Black Myth: Wukong has received widespread acclaim globally. Its embedded multilingual subtitles enable global players from diverse linguistic backgrounds to immerse themselves in traditional Chinese culture, establishing itself as a successful model
of game localization and significantly advancing cultural exchange. In analyzing the English translation of this game, it is evident that the
translator always plays a central role, exercising translator’s subjectivity to accurately transform language elements rich in Chinese cultural
characteristics, such as idioms, metaphors, and regional dialects like storytelling in Northern Shaanxi, overcoming cultural comprehension
barriers to provide global players with an authentic narrative experience.
