A Study of the Multi-functionality of Language in On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous
Abstract
diasporic experience in America. However, it has received rare scholarly attention in China. Language in this novel functions not merely as
a medium of communication but also as a bridge connecting past and present, homeland and hostland. By analyzing cases in points such as
characters' names, the failure of the mother tongue, the acquisition of a foreign language, and the invocations of family, this paper explores the
poetic, metalingual, conative, and emotive functions of language.
