On the Function of Mongolian Cafe as Public Space

Conghui Yang

Abstract

Under the tide of rapid urbanization and globalization, how to survive and express minority culture in modern urban space has become an important issue. Cafe, as the "third space" connecting family and work, presents a unique form-Mongolian cafe in Hohhot, a multiethnic capital city. Based on the field investigation, it is found that Mongolian Cafe organically integrates Mongolian cultural elements into
modern consumption scenes through the dimensions of site selection strategy, decorative language, product design and space atmosphere creation, making it not only a commercial place for providing drinks and leisure, but also an important platform for cultural display, communication and reproduction.
