A Study on the Visual Design of Lion Dance Culture Based on Semiotic Theory

Yiran Niu

Abstract

Against the backdrop of cultural confidence building and intangible cultural heritage revitalization practices, this study employs
semiotics as its theoretical foundation to examine contemporary visual translation and innovative design challenges surrounding the national
intangible cultural heritage "Lion Dance Culture."The study first systematically deconstructs the signifier-signified relationships within visual
symbolssuch as forms, colors, and patternsin lion dance culture, identifying core challenges in contemporary dissemination: cultural recognition barriers, rigid visual language, and lack of interactive experience. Building on this analysis, targeted design strategies are proposed
and validated through iterative design practices. This study aims to explore how, guided by semiotic theory, lion dance culture can transform
from a traditional symbolic system into a contemporary visual expression integrated into the digital context, thereby providing an innovative
pathway for its living inheritance that combines theoretical support with practical feasibility.
