An Analysis of the Causes for the Transformation of Visual Narration in the Southern Song Nine Elders Painting

throughout successive dynasties. Based on the poems and prose about the gatherings recorded in the surviving Collected Works of Bai Juyi, it is
known that the earliest version of the Nine Elders Painting adopted a single-figure portrait format, while in the Southern Song Dynasty, it transformed into a group portrait depicting the "Nine Elders" engaging in activities at Xiangshan Mountain or in gardens. Combining the existing Nine
Elders Paintings from the Southern Song Dynasty, this paper explores the causes of the transformation in the visual narrative of such images.
