Digital Nostalgia and Collective Memory of Traditional Villages on Social Media

Jingzhi Zou

Abstract

Research has found that social media has reshaped the visual presentation and memory practices of traditional villages. Through
image dissemination, cross-cultural features such as diversified platforms, symbolic construction, differentiated narrative perspectives, and
instant interaction have emerged. These visual practices actively participate in the maintenance and reconstruction of local collective memory
by reinforcing and reinterpreting memory symbols, establishing cross-temporal connections, enabling intergenerational transmission, and
facilitating ongoing negotiation. At the same time, this process is accompanied by global challenges, including image homogenization, super
ficial representation, and the deconstruction of authenticity. Under the influence of platform logic and visual consumption, traditional village
images may contribute to the production of "hyper-real" memories, which risk weakening the diversity and credibility of collective memory.
These findings highlight the need for value-oriented digital memory practices, stronger collaboration among multiple actors, deeper
content production attentive to cultural meanings, and sustained efforts to safeguard authenticity in the digital circulation of traditional vil
lage images.
