Analysis of the Application and Performance of Ethnic Instrumental Vocabulary in the Violin Piece "Harvest Fisherman's Song"

Juetong Liang

Abstract

Harvest Fisherman's Song is a violin piece by composer Li Zili, written in 1973, produced largely on the basis of tonal material from
fisher-man's songs of Shanwei, Guangdong. The work is an important piece in the nationalization of our violin music. Through a consideration
of the score, the recordings, and performance practice, this paper investigates the work's national instrumental vocabulary and its realization
at the level of the violin. At the compositional level, the introduction operates with guzheng arpeggios. It moves from slow to fast, low to high
with the control of bow and string. The theme turns the vocal style of Shanwei fishermen's songs into violin melodic expression. The musical
material to be performed is realised through the use of arpeggios, position shifts, and multiple stops, etc. This study offers an integrated analysis of dispersed national vocabularies and performance realization, opening up reference for relevant research and teaching.
