An Analysis of Subtitles Translation from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence: a Case Study of Supernatural
Abstract
This thesis examines the subtitle translation of Supernatural through the lens of Eugene A. Nida's functional equivalence theory.
Focusing on cultural functional equivalence, the study explores the application of two principal translation strategiesdomestication and
foreignizationand identifies potential pitfalls arising from their misuse, including undertranslation, overtranslation, and indecent translation.
It argues that subtitle translators must carefully consider embedded cultural factors and strive for cultural functional equivalence to avoid such
issues. The analysis demonstrates that adopting cultural functional equivalence as a guiding principle offers a valid and comprehensive framework for translating American TV series subtitles. Ultimately, this study of Supernatural aims to provide practical, theoretically grounded
strategies for subtitle translators.
