Chinese Internet Memes and Related Online Expressions as Cultural Teaching Resources in International Chinese Education

Abstract


With the development of digital media, Chinese learners increasingly encounter Chinese through social media, short videos, comment sections, bullet-screen comments, and online chats. In these contexts, Chinese internet memes and related online expressions have
become common resources for expressing emotion, responding to others, evaluating events, constructing humor, and marking identity. This
paper discusses their value as cultural teaching resources in international Chinese education. Based on literature analysis and functional classification, it identifies four teachable types: emotion-expression memes, social-response memes, identity and group-culture memes, and evaluation and attitude memes. It further discusses how such materials can be selected, contextualized, and used to support learners understanding
of online Chinese culture and pragmatic meaning.
