A Comparative Study of Hypotaxis and Parataxis in English and Chinese: Focusing on the Use of Relational Words, Conjunctions, and Prepositions
Abstract
Hypotaxis and parataxis are widely recognized as fundamental principles governing the syntactic organization of English and Chinese, respectively, and constitute one of the most salient and universally acknowledged contrasts between the two languages. Drawing on selected examples from written corpora, this paper elucidates the specific manifestations of hypotaxis and parataxis by examining the divergent
usage patterns of relational words, conjunctions, and prepositions in English and Chinese. Furthermore, through this comparative analysis,
the study seeks to uncover underlying differences in the cognitive paradigms and conceptual frameworks through which Chinese and Western
cultures perceive and interpret the world.
