Effect of Group Music Therapy on Loneliness in Elderly People in Nursing Homes
Abstract
older adults (aged ?80 years) from a nursing home in Wuhan were recruited. A one-group pre-posttest design was used. Participants received
13 weeks of group music therapy (once a week, 40 minutes each session). Loneliness was assessed using the Chinese version of the UCLA
Loneliness Scale (Version 3) before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Result: The mean
loneliness score after the intervention (38.54.18) was significantly lower than that before the intervention (55.57.89), with a statistically significant difference (Z = -2.2, P = 0.028). Conclusion: Group music therapy can effectively alleviate loneliness in elderly residents of nursing
homes and has good feasibility and application value in institutional elderly care settings.
