From Regional Styles to Piano Expression: A Study of Zhang Zhao's Arrangements in Chinese Melodies

Huiru Xu

Abstract

Zhang Zhao's collection of piano arrangements, Chinese Melodies, draws extensively on musical material from various regions of
China and stands as a significant representative work of his exploration of piano-based expressions of indigenous Chinese musical culture.
Taking Chinese Melodies as its subject, this article adopts a regional perspective to analyse works of different types, including the music of
Yunnan's ethnic minorities, Mongolian music, and folk songs from the Northwest and North of China, examining their characteristics of arrangement in terms of melodic form, harmonic structure, compositional organisation and sonic expression.
