A Contrast Analysis of English Translations of Wang Wei's"A Retreat at Zhongnan Mountain" from the Perspective of Construal Theory
Abstract
thoughts of emptiness, peace and quietness, Wang Wei's poetic works stand out from those of his contemporaries and build an exclusive mode
in traditional Chinese Tang poetry. While existing studies concerning construal theory within cognitive poetics have grown considerably in
recent years, few academic papers explore how this cognitive theory applies to the textual analysis of Wang Wei's translated poems. Adopting
the five core construal dimensions proposed by Ronald W. Langacker as the analytical framework, this paper compares three well-known English versions of "A Retreat at Zhongnan Mountain" by Wang Wei, offering cognitive interpretations for the comprehension and cross-cultural
transmission of typical poetic images in the poet's works.
