Transnational K-pop and the Experience Economy: Cultural Spillovers in the Australian Creative Indus Tries

Abstract


This study examines the cultural and economic spillover effects of transnational K-pop in Australia and considers how its expansion
is reshaping local cultural consumption and the creative industries. Drawing on cultural spillover theory, the experience economy, the creative
industry value chain and transnational cultural flow, the research adopts a case study approach based on secondary data. It analyses major Kpop concerts and events in Australia, including performances by BLACKPINK and Stray Kids and KCON Australia, alongside media reports,
industry data and cultural policy documents. The findings suggest that K-pop generates spillover effects across tourism, retail, hospitality, urban branding and digital cultural production. These effects are supported by platform-based distribution, fan participation and the demand for
immersive and identity-based cultural experiences. K-pop events also create opportunities for local creative workers and strengthen Australia's
connections with Asia-Pacific cultural markets. However, these benefits are accompanied by several challenges, including high participation
costs, unequal cultural access, competition for youth cultural spending and the limited position of Australian creative workers within transnational production chains. The study argues that Australian cultural policy should recognise the economic and social value of transnational
popular culture while also addressing its potential effects on cultural inequality and the sustainability of local creative industries.
