An Experimental Study on the Embodied Perspective of Cultivating Moral Psychology and Behavior in College Students: The Influence of Directional Metaphor on Moral Cognition

Qianying Luo

Abstract

Different research methods were used to explore the influence of directional metaphor on moral cognition from the embodied perspective, and further examined the role of specific gestures in improving moral cognition and behavior of college students. The results showed
that (1) under three different experimental paradigms, the response times (RTs) for the judgment of moral words exhibited a significant difference between up and down, while no significant difference was observed in the judgment of immoral words; (2) there was no significant
difference of the RTs between the gesture learning experimental group and the control group during the words judgment task; (3) in all the
words judgment task of the study, the RTs of the subjects about the moral words was significantly slower than that of the immoral words. It
was showed that the influence of directional metaphor on moral cognition exists at the lexical conceptual level, and this effect was only produced in the judgment of moral words, but did not have the same facilitation effect and interference effect in the judgment of immoral words.
Moreover, this effect was based on whether effective conditions can be manipulated to stimulate stable directional mental representations in
peoples minds.
