The Relationship between Childhood Emotional Neglect and Psychotherapy Acceptance Among College Students: The Mediating Role of Proactive Personality

Abstract


Objective This study aims to investigate the effect of childhood emotional neglect on psychotherapy acceptance in adulthood
among college students. Methods From September to November 2023, a sample of 457 college students from three universities in SiChuan Province were selected by random sampling. Participants were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (Emotional Neglect Sub-scale), the Proactive Personality Scale, and professional psychological support help-seeking attitude scale. Data were analyzed
by correlation and regression analyses. Results Emotional neglect was significantly negatively associated with psychotherapy acceptance (?
= -0.121, P < 0.001) and proactive personality traits (? = -0.567, P < 0.001). In contrast, proactive personality traits were positively associated with psychotherapy acceptance (? = 0.087, P < 0.001). Conclusion: (1) There are significant correlations between emotional neglect,
proactive personality, and psychotherapy acceptance; (2) Proactive personality plays a partial mediating role between emotional neglect
and psychotherapy acceptance.
