An Analysis of the Educational Value of the New Senior English Book from a Multimodal Perspective

Abstract


This study conducts a multimodal discourse analysis of content related to nurturing values in high school English textbooks, focusing on how these values are constructed. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Systemic Functional Grammar and Kress & Van
Leeuwens Visual Grammar, it compares compulsory textbooks from the New Senior English Book for China series. The research explores
the interaction between texts and images to reflect key nurturing values, including moral, cultural, national, technological, and ecological
aspects. By analyzing the modal forms within the discourse, the study examines how these textbooks reflect these five types of nurturing values through the relationship between text, images, and their integration. The findings aim to provide insights for future textbook reforms and
enhance core literacy teaching in related subjects. With the ongoing development of educational technology, the analysis of teaching materials
is becoming increasingly diverse and personalized, shifting focus from content and structure to the forms, media, and interactions that meet
individual student needs and learning styles. Ultimately, values should be a key concern in textbook development and research to support effective teaching practices.
