Fostering Social Identity in Aging: the Swedish Study Circle Approach in China

Abstract


With the acceleration of global aging, issues concerning the elderly have garnered increasing attention. Social identity plays a significant role in influencing the psychological well-being, social participation, and overall quality of life of older adults. Based on semi-structured interviews, this study identifies several challenges faced by the elderly in contemporary society, including limited social engagement,
difficulties in adapting to post-retirement role changes, a lack of social support systems, and barriers in adapting to new technologiesfactors
that often lead to feelings of isolation and marginalization. To explore potential solutions, this paper analyzes and synthesizes literature on
the Swedish study circle, which emphasizes social interaction and participation, new civic roles and responsibilities, community support and
cooperation, and flexible learning platforms. These features are conducive to fostering social integration and enhancing the sense of identity
among the elderly. Drawing on the practical experiences of Swedish study circles, the paper proposes suggestions for improving social identity
among older adults in China, including creating small interactive learning environments, assigning new roles and responsibilities, strengthening community support, and providing adaptable learning platforms. These strategies aim to alleviate feelings of isolation and identity crises,
promote social recognition, and facilitate better integration into modern society, while also enhancing the social support system within Chinese elder education.
