English Vocabulary Teaching in the Thematic Context from the Perspective of New Curriculum Standards

Abstract


Vocabulary is a foundation of English learning, and vocabulary teaching is a vital component of English teaching in junior high
school. English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2022) thinks highly of the thematic context, advocating that students should
understand authentic language and comprehend thematic meanings from the context. Therefore, flexibly combining the thematic context with
junior high English vocabulary teaching is a priority for English teachers in junior high school from the unit instructional perspective prompted by new curriculum standards. In the whole text, at first, I state the current problems of vocabulary teaching in middle school, then analyzing the necessity of vocabulary teaching based on the thematic context according to the English Curriculum Standards for compulsory Education (2022). At last, I present specific teaching procedures of vocabulary teaching according to the thematic context in an example of Unit 8
Natural Disasters in Grade 8 and have a summary of strategies in vocabulary teaching in order that students can improve their proficiency of
putting words in actual use.
