A Comparative Study of Traditional Hero Images in Chinese and Western Cultures -- A Case Study of Journey to the West and The Odyssey

Abstract


Heroes often occupy an important place in the history and literature of all nations. Therefore, this paper briefly analyzes and compares the traditional hero images in Chinese and Western cultures. First, it analyzes the characteristics of hero images in China and the West,
such as the difference between the theme of the individual hero and collectivism, and infers several possible reasons for such differences, such
as culture and history. Then, the article focuses on two classical worksJourney to the West and The Odysseyas examples, analyzing the
hero images depicted in them, as well as the similarities and differences between the two. Finally, the paper points out the significance of this
study: it can deepen understanding and communication between Chinese and Western cultures and reduce misunderstandings caused by different cultural backgrounds.
