The Influence of Teaching Experience and Visits to Foreign Countries on Secondary School EFL Teachers Intercultural Competence in China

Jiayi Liu

Abstract

This study examines the development of intercultural competence (IC) among Chinese secondary school English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. The specific purpose is to explores how teaching experience and professional development (PD) programs is correlated
with teachers' IC. Based on a mixed-methods analysis of questionnaire and interviews, this study highlights the positive correlation between
IC with teaching experience and PD programs. However, participants mentioned insufficient PD programs prevented them from enhancing
their IC. Moreover, most teachers believe that teachers themselves, schools and education departments are the main entities that can help
enhance teachers' intercultural competence. These findings have significant pedagogical implications for educators, schools, and educational
institutions and future research.
